Celebrated Fan Flowers

Author: Li Zemin
Publisher: Shaanxi People's Fine Arts Publishing House
Brief Introduction:
This book features over a hundred folding fan paintings, with a wide range of subjects including landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures. The works combine meticulous brushwork with freehand techniques, varying in complexity and showcasing the talents of numerous skilled artists. The landscapes include scenic views of Taihu Lake, the northwestern landscape, the majestic Taihang Mountains, the fishing villages of the South China Sea, and the urban nightscapes with glowing lights. The figures depict real-life scenes such as the nomads of Gannan, Uyghur herdresses, Tibetan women cooking, and cobblers. Classical themes include Banqiao reciting poetry, the night visit to Red Cliff, Zhaojun’s departure from the frontier, and waiting under the moon at West Chamber. The flowers and birds include plum blossoms, lotuses, bamboos, chrysanthemums, peonies, pomegranates, birds, insects, and fish, each conveying emotions through their depictions. The artists, many of whom possess profound artistic skills and acclaim, draw inspiration from tradition to express contemporary sentiments while emphasizing the expressive spirit of Chinese painting. Their brushwork, though simple, carries profound meaning. Their techniques are richer than those of their predecessors, whether in meticulous or freehand painting, unbound by ancient conventions. In figure painting, they pay special attention to the emotional depth and atmospheric composition, creating lively and individualized figures. Some folding fan paintings also make new breakthroughs in color use, with or without empty spaces, yet achieving depth. The colors, whether light or rich, harmonize ink and color while enriching the visual experience. The brushwork styles and artistic expressions are diverse, highlighting the artists' unique personalities. These folding fan paintings are expected to have a positive social impact, offering people comfort and warmth to their spiritual lives, and contributing to the promotion of the fine artistic tradition of folding fan painting.
