Features: "The New College English Proficiency Test Series by SECC" is designed and developed according to the requirements of the "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)," the "College English Test Band 4 Syllabus," and the "College English Test Band 6 Syllabus." This series of books provides students with a standard for evaluating their learning outcomes and helps them become familiar with the question types and quantities of the Band 4 and Band 6 exams, thereby preparing them adequately. This book includes 10 sets of practice tests for the College English Band 5 Proficiency Test. Each set of tests covers various question types introduced in recent Band 6 exams, including Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Word Usage, Error Correction, Writing, Compound Dictation, Short Answer Questions, and Cloze. Each test set is followed by answers and brief hints or explanations, including word discrimination, grammar structure usage, understanding of text structure, analysis of deep meanings in the text, and model essays. The listening sections are accompanied by transcripts at the end of the book. Since the Band 4 and Band 6 tests differ in their level requirements for candidates, this test series serves as a bridge between the two. The question types, number of questions, scoring methods, and test duration are the same as those of the Band 6 exam, though some question types are slightly easier. The materials for the tests are primarily selected from authoritative books, newspapers, magazines, and dictionaries both domestically and internationally, ensuring a wide and fresh range of content. This helps students improve their self-expectations and lay a solid foundation for preparing for the future Band 6 unified examination.
Part 1: Listening Comprehension, consisting of 20 questions. This section is divided into two parts: Section A has 10 questions, each including a pair of dialogues with two sentences each, followed by a question. Section B contains 3 short passages, each followed by 3 or 4 questions, totaling 10 questions.
Part 2: Reading Comprehension. The selected passages are articles on general topics with higher language difficulty, requiring candidates to analyze, infer, judge, and summarize the content, as well as understand the author's perspective and attitude.
Part 3: Word Usage. This section aims to test candidates' ability to use and distinguish vocabulary and phrases.
Part 4: Error Correction. Error Correction is a relatively new question type that has become increasingly common in recent years, testing candidates' comprehensive abilities in vocabulary, grammar, and contextual understanding.
Part 5: Writing. This section is designed to test candidates' ability to express ideas in written English, with a word count of approximately 150 words.
Part 6: Compound Dictation. Candidates are required to fill in the blanks based on what they hear and write down the main points of the last three blanks. The third reading is provided for candidates to check their answers.
Part 7: Cloze. Candidates must choose the best answer to complete the passage, ensuring that both the meaning and structure of the text are restored. This section tests candidates' comprehensive language application skills.
Part 8: Short Answer Questions. This section consists of an article followed by 5 questions or incomplete sentences. Candidates are required to answer the questions or complete the sentences in brief English after reading the article, assessing their ability to understand and provide concise answers.
