Record of Chinese Women's Clothing

Features: The history in this book is primarily carried by physical artifacts and narrated through images of these artifacts. The concept of "modern times" here differs slightly from the general definition used in textbooks. Based on certain peculiarities in the development of clothing, we have defined the time frame of our narrative as the period between the Opium War and the founding of the People's Republic of China. Although the title broadly mentions women's clothing, the book can only record the attire of women in relatively developed and affluent areas who had the opportunity to access fashion at the time. The artifacts and images used in this book are mostly collections from the Donghua University Museum of Clothing and Accessories. Readers may notice that compared to similar works, they are not as lavish and colorful. This is because the museum, which will open in 2005, collects artifacts with a focus on everyday clothing. We hope these collections can provide a relatively comprehensive and authentic reflection of people's clothing lives in different settings at that time.
