The brain controls people's emotions, appetite, sleep, heart rate, and breathing. It determines who you are and who you will become. The amazing brain has been compared to many different objects and devices—from spiderwebs to clocks to telephone switchboards. Now, people like to compare it to a computer. Neurons, or "nerve cells," can be imagined as tiny trees with trunks that branch into branches, which further branch into smaller, leafy twigs. The "branches" of a neuron are synapses, through which information must pass between neurons. The more branches, the more synapses; the more synapses, the more information the brain can process. Imagine the human brain as a muscle. If this muscle is not used, it will atrophy and weaken. Using the brain promotes the growth and branching of dendrites. If dendrites are not used, they will wither.
