He is the only clue to recovering the violin. The Hong Kong Tianlong Gang tracks him down, and Pan Xiaowei nearly dies several times. Through frequent interactions, Pan Xiaowei develops feelings for Lü Yuanyuan. After much persuasion from Lü Yuanyuan, he agrees to return the violin but demands she escape to Hong Kong with him. Lü Yuanyuan is captivated by Pan Xiaowei's love but cannot betray her organization or abandon her duty. She finally calls the police, and this fairy-tale romance comes to an end.
The story begins with an Italian violin, a priceless treasure stolen from China and smuggled to Hong Kong, sparking a battle between the two major Hong Kong gangs—the Pan family and the Tianlong Gang. Pan Xiaowei, the youngest son of the Pan family, is sent to the mainland for refuge. Upon learning of this, our public security personnel immediately form an investigation team, using Pan Xiaowei as a clue to track down the violin. The Tianlong Gang follows Pan Xiaowei to Beijing, and just as killers target him, our officers arrest both of them. Interrogations reveal the violin is in the hands of the Pan family, but since Pan Xiaowei never participates in family affairs, he is unaware of its exact location.
Detective Captain Wu Lichang then sends a recently graduated female police officer, Lü Yuanyuan, disguised as a tour guide, along with several armed police officers, to protect Pan Xiaowei's safety while investigating the national treasure violin. This incident touches Pan Xiaowei, who finally agrees to cooperate with the police and persuade his older brother Pan Dawei to return the violin. Over several days of interaction, Lü Yuanyuan and Pan Xiaowei develop a faint romance, while the police officer Xue Yu, who has secretly loved Lü Yuanyuan, feels heartbroken. Meanwhile, after several twists and turns, our public security learns that the leader of the Tianlong Gang is arriving in Beijing for religious ceremonies and will, as usual, accept the Pan family's ceremonial gift—the violin. The investigation team sets a trap, planning to reclaim the national property with Pan Xiaowei's active cooperation. However, unexpected complications arise: Pan Dawei orders Pan Xiaowei to assassinate the Tianlong Gang leader during the violin presentation and escape with it.
As our public security officers search for Pan Dawei and the violin, Pan Xiaowei secretly steals the violin and risks coming to see Lü Yuanyuan. Persuaded by Lü Yuanyuan, he secretly hands the violin over to the police, and it finally returns to China. Pan Xiaowei then plans to escape to Hong Kong with Lü Yuanyuan. Along the way, Pan Dawei and his menly monitor Lü Yuanyuan, preventing her from contacting her organization. When they reach the last small town before crossing the border, Lü Yuanyuan, after much hesitation, finally overcomes her personal feelings with her sense of duty as a police officer and secretly calls the police. By the time the officers arrive, Pan Dawei and his men have already died in a battle with the Tianlong Gang, and Pan Xiaowei, in front of Lü Yuanyuan and her teammates, commits suicide in despair.
Back in Beijing, Lü Yuanyuan reflects on her hesitation during the hostage situation, driven by personal emotions. Deeply self-blaming, she resigns from her police job and returns to her hometown in Northeast China. Just as she plans to live a quiet life in seclusion, she discovers she is pregnant with Pan Xiaowei's child. The child is innocent, and more importantly, she is the mother. Determined to keep the child, Lü Yuanyuan struggles to find employment and faces financial hardship. Eventually, she returns to Beijing and becomes a hostess, drinking to numb herself.
Learning that the Pan family still has descendants to carry on its legacy, they trick Lü Yuanyuan and her child into going to Hong Kong to reclaim them. A year later, Lü Yuanyuan and her child tragically die on the streets, becoming victims of the internal power struggles within the Pan family.
