Features: Preface to the Third Edition Since its revision in 1998, this book has been reprinted more than ten times, with a total circulation of over 100,000 copies, thanks to the support of its readers. It has provided valuable assistance to candidates preparing for the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4), the Graduate Admission English Test (GAET), the English Major Test Band 4 (TEM-4), and other English grammar-based exams. At the suggestion of Fudan University Press, the authors have made appropriate revisions to the book recently. These changes primarily include the addition of some exercises, most of which are derived from actual examination questions. Additionally, in the explanation of grammatical principles, efforts have been made to ensure they are standardized and objective, making them more accessible and understandable to readers. Although grammar-based questions have begun to fade in some English exams, this does not mean that grammar is no longer important. If we compare language to a high-rise building, then vocabulary is the bricks and mortar, while grammar is the steel framework—the indispensable component that sustains the language. Grammar is crucial for reading, writing, translation, and even conversation. The authors hope that the revised edition will further benefit college students and English learners, helping them achieve academic success. By the authors, August 2004
