Law is a highly practical social science, and legal education should closely align with legislative and judicial practices to cultivate students' abilities to analyze and resolve real-world issues. To achieve this, reforms in traditional legal teaching methods and content are necessary. Currently, the case method widely adopted by higher legal institutions is one of the most important reform measures. The implementation of the case method has improved the quality of legal education and enhanced students' practical skills, making it a teaching approach worth promoting and advocating.
In 2001, with funding from the Shandong Provincial Department of Education, we undertook a reform project for the teaching of legal education in Shandong Province. This project aimed to comprehensively improve the quality of legal education and cultivate qualified legal professionals who could meet practical needs. To this end, we emphasized the practicality of legal education at every stage of teaching while strengthening foundational theories. We ensured close ties between classroom and extracurricular teaching and judicial practice through various means. For example, we not only arranged a semester-long graduation internship to help students fully grasp the operational procedures of judicial work but also frequently invited practitioners to campus to share their judicial experiences. We also established forums such as "Judges' Forum," "Prosecutors' Forum," and "Lawyers' Forum" to enhance students' practical awareness.
However, we believe that these efforts alone are insufficient. Students also need regular case-based teaching materials, which is why case textbooks are essential. Therefore, developing case-based teaching and strengthening textbook construction are crucial, as they form the foundation of effective case teaching. While many case textbooks have been published, most are merely case analyses with a "one case, one question" format and lack integration with legal provisions and legal theories, making it difficult for students to grasp current legal stipulations and relevant legal theories through cases.
With the strong support of Peking University Press, we have compiled this entirely new set of legal case textbooks to meet the needs of case-based teaching. To create a high-quality and distinctive case textbook, we conducted extensive research and analysis, summarized the strengths and weaknesses of existing case textbooks, and incorporated various suggestions to better align with the requirements of teaching reform.

This case textbook is edited by Professor Fang Shaokun and Professor Guo Mingrui as the chief editors, with several contributors who possess teaching experience and a high level of legal theoretical expertise serving as section editors. Due to our limited experience in compiling case textbooks and the absence of judicial practice experience, there may be imperfections in this book. We sincerely hope that readers will provide constructive criticism and suggestions so that this case textbook can better meet the needs of legal education.
