The Beijing Adult Higher Education Bachelor's Degree English Proficiency Test (commonly referred to as the Adult English Proficiency Test) is one of the necessary conditions for students in non-foreign language majors to obtain a bachelor's degree in adult higher education. Since 1991, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission has administered this exam, which has been held 14 times in a row. Due to the increasing number of candidates each year, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission decided in 2003 to change the exam from an annual single session to two sessions per year, held in April and November respectively. To meet the needs of candidates, a limited number of relevant teaching materials have been published. However, some of these books are too thin in content or slightly outdated, unable to meet the growing preparation needs of a large number of candidates. For most candidates, passing the Bachelor's Degree English Proficiency Test is not easy, and they urgently need a comprehensive and systematic series of teaching materials to help them improve their vocabulary, grammar, reading, translation, and other skills.
The "Bachelor's Degree English Proficiency Test Guidance Series," edited by Yu Ying from the Department of English at Peking University, has emerged in response to this demand. This guidance series is a summary of the editors' dedicated work in teaching and guiding candidates for the Bachelor's Degree English Proficiency Test. It is not only comprehensive and rich in content, with detailed explanations and distinctive features, but also highly effective—truly a valuable book for readers. This series is compiled according to the new syllabus requirements of 2003, with an ingenious and innovative arrangement that closely meets the needs of candidates. For example, the grammar section is "concise yet detailed," covering all the frequently tested grammar points in the exam and providing insightful explanations from a fresh perspective, unlike general "all-encompassing" grammar books. In the vocabulary section, the author does not follow the old format but arranges the most frequently tested words in the exam into memory groups by part of speech, making it easier for candidates to overcome vocabulary challenges through associative learning. Additionally, many teaching materials only provide answers to exercises without explanations, but this series offers detailed, thorough, and accurate explanations for all exercises, not only facilitating self-study and self-assessment but also helping candidates achieve the learning outcomes of "generalizing from the specific" and "gaining insight from one example."
What is even more noteworthy is that this series reflects the editors' unique problem-solving methods and techniques for question types such as grammar, error correction, reading comprehension, and translation in the Bachelor's Degree English Proficiency Test. It is a crystallization of the editors' years of teaching and exam guidance experience, akin to an excellent "classroom lecture." If candidates thoroughly master the key points of this book, their exam scores will undoubtedly improve significantly.
At the moment when this series is about to be published, I am very happy to write this preface. In closing, I wish all candidates great benefit from this series.
