Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer and literary critic. Born into a family of actors, he advocated "art for art's sake," promoting aestheticism and mysticism. He was greatly influenced by the decadent movement in Western literature, particularly French bourgeois literature. His novels include The Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, The Black Cat, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. His essays include The Philosophy of Composition and The Principles of Poetry.
Published in 1841, The Murders in the Rue Morgue is widely recognized as the earliest detective novel. It tells of a murder in a locked room, with the culprit being a chimpanzee. Published in 1842, The Mystery of Marie Rogêt is a purely deductive detective story. Other works, such as The Gold Bug, The Marquis de Morcerf, The Purloined Letter, and four other novels, successfully created five distinct detective fiction models: (1) murder in a locked room, (2) pure deductive detective from a chair, (3) solving cryptographic tricks, (4) the detective as the murderer, and (5) psychological detection, as well as the blind spot of human perception. He created the artistic archetype of the amateur detective, Auguste Dupin.
Edgar Allan Poe is hailed as the "father of the detective novel." His novels are characterized by their bizarre and fantastical style, filled with an atmosphere of horror.
