Features: Edgar Allan Poe wrote over sixty or seventy short stories in his lifetime, although he only wrote four or five detective novels, he is universally recognized as the pioneer of detective fiction. His representative works, such as "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt," "The Purloined Letter," and "The Gold Bug," are regarded as the forerunners of this genre and have had a significant influence on later works. The character of the amateur detective Dupin, whom he created in the first three novels, can be considered a predecessor to Sherlock Holmes as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. According to Howard Haycraft, an expert in detective fiction, "This Dupin is also Poe's self-idealized embodiment, as he was exceptionally intelligent from a young age and always sought to demonstrate his superiority. Therefore, Poe portrayed Dupin as a super-intelligent, keenly observant, and prophetic ideal figure. To highlight his greatness, he also used a friend who deeply admired him and was inferior in comparison to narrate his deeds. Additionally, he wrote about a dull-witted detective with good intentions but frequent mistakes as a contrast. The crime scenes were usually set in tightly locked dark rooms; the concealment of evidence was done in an obviously unexpected manner; the solving process employed rigorous, empathetic reasoning (now referred to as psychological analysis); and the was systematically compelled to surrender and confess. Finally, the protagonist would proudly and eloquently explain the entire process. This has become the model for Poe's detective novels." And this model has been imitated by detective novelists worldwide for over a hundred and forty years, with many works following in his footsteps and failing to break free from this mold. Even Wilkie Collins, the British writer known as the "father of detective fiction," was influenced by Poe in his famous work "The Moonstone" (1868), where the detective Cuff was inspired by Poe's style.
