Features: Poetic language and philosophical contemplation create a novel framework that is both substantial and ethereal. By boldly showcasing a Chinese experiential stream of consciousness distinct from Western discourse, the novel characters are rendered lifelike yet embody universal symbolic significance of their era. In multiple aspects—linguistic elasticity, rich content, spiritual depth, and the flow of consciousness—the novel highlights the longing of contemporary individuals for a spiritual dance amidst their heavy physical existence. Wang Yuanchuan needs courage to write a long. To write a good one requires not only courage but also unique deep affection, a detached and profound perspective, incisive talent, and thinking that is never clichéd. Reflection is a knife edge that constantly cuts at oneself along the path of life. Only such contemplation, immersed in life, can transcend temporary phenomena and pierce through the direction of human nature and history, revealing China's experience within a diverse global landscape. Gu Yan's The Dance of the Soul is her seventh long, following The Hangzhou Woman, Painful Flight, Night Shanghai, and six other works, all of which possess intellectual depth. This novel is better than The Hangzhou Woman but also more enigmatic. Perhaps because Gu Yan is not only a novelist but also an essayist and a poet of considerable talent, she explores the life experiences of the protagonists Kairei, Aman, and Xuseling against the backdrop of significant historical periods in the 20th century and contemporary social transformations, portraying the joys and sorrows of intellectual women and men. There is love in the novel, but it is not limited to romantic love. Her inspiration stems from a broader conception. The driving force behind her creation is the uncertainty of the Chinese people at the turn of the century, amidst peaceful yet transformative times, as to where they should go? She looks at the world, which is bustling and noisy, yet everyone's soul is drifting. Yet she possesses the strength to gather them all together in a single book. This is evident throughout the novel. It is a struggle in the real world, and also a battle within the mind against oneself. Despite setbacks, she seeks to imbue this chaotic world with a poetic life. It is not difficult to see her sentiments. When describing Aman's youth, she reveals these feelings: "No one knows the inner thoughts of that boy, only Aman does. In the nostalgic memory of the sunset, in a future time that cannot be confirmed, Aman is a child crying under an olive tree. His thin and frail figure is soothed by the gentle sea breeze on the evening lawn. The gradually receding mountains and dense forests symbolize his inner secrets. In his childhood recollections, hunger casts a shadow, the silent streets, the vast open fields, the narrow alleys covered in snow in winter, and the ancient buildings that suddenly transform into an unforgettable memory. Aman wanders in his memories. The past stories, all hidden swords of revenge, gradually lose their sharpness with time, turning into a stream of water flowing gently." This sentiment is again revealed when the past becomes recollection: "Deep within Aman's heart, he is washing away the hidden shame he carries. In his eyes, the gods and their offspring, in ancient times, roamed among temples, battlefields, palaces, streets, cinemas, schools, and stations, their presence everywhere, invisible around us."
Because this novel is constructed through Gu Yan's poetic language, philosophical contemplation, and flowing consciousness, the latent power beneath the various manifestations of human nature elevates them to a higher realm. This is the challenge of the novel. Gu Yan has published six long novels. The cries and beliefs she expressed in those works seem to have yet to complete the framework in her heart. She aims to capture the unique state of survival and spiritual demeanor at the turn of the century in this long. She wants to build a dwelling where souls can reside. Thus, we enter the world of her novel. From the physical to the spiritual, Aman, as a scholar, dies in Paris, France, while spreading Chinese culture. We might say he begins to be extremely annoying. Both overly sentimental and unprofessional, he uses his body to think, leading to Xuseling's suicide out of love. Yet Aman truly lives poetically. Who in this novel lives more poetically than him? This is also why, in our era, when yin prevails over yang and men have lost their former vigor, Aman is a typical representative. Kairei is a rather endearing female character in this novel. Gu Yan seems to have torn Kairei apart and then pieced her back together. As a result, Kairei asks herself upon her first appearance how the dust on her sleeves in old age would be layered upon layered. Then, she infuses her fragmented soul with the resilient life force unique to women. Thus, Gu Yan's characters soar from the pages into reality. This is a skill. She allows us to see souls with spiritual depth, while the body seems almost superfluous. In the process of shifting the ontology of life downward globally, many artists are troubled by whether they should eliminate value judgments. In an era of utilitarianism and ignorance, where the depth of human nature and the horizon of freedom are increasingly blurred, and with the exponential growth of marketization of power, to boldly express one's value judgments in one's work is undoubtedly a spiritual gamble. Yet it is an artistic gamble worth taking! I am gratified to see that Gu Yan does not interpret her daily aesthetics in a hollow manner but uses poetic language and philosophical contemplation to create a novel framework that is both substantial and ethereal. By boldly showcasing a Chinese experiential stream of consciousness distinct from Western discourse, the novel characters are rendered lifelike yet embody universal symbolic significance of their era. In terms of linguistic elasticity, rich content, spiritual depth, the flow of consciousness, and atmosphere, the novel strikes a fine balance. The aura in the flow of consciousness, the rich spirituality, and the profound depth of the content continuously highlight the longing of contemporary individuals for a spiritual dance amidst their heavy physical existence—the dance of the soul.
