Author: Writing Group of "English-Chinese English Comparative Manual of Common Terms of the World Trade Organization"
Publisher:
Publishing Time: 2004-12-01
Features: The Chinese terms included in this manual are basically based on the specialized terminology of the World Trade Organization: A considerable number of terms in the database have recognized corresponding Chinese terms, which we have included. Additionally, a significant number of terms required careful consideration and comparison of English, French, and Spanish translations before selecting an appropriate Chinese expression for inclusion. It is undeniable, however, that due to differences in linguistic structure and expression between Chinese and the three languages (English, French, and Spanish), there are still some terms in the database that currently lack precise corresponding Chinese terms. Therefore, this manual does not define ambiguous, forced, or colloquial terms in Chinese. The format of this manual is as follows:
1. Generally, single-character Chinese terms are not included;
2. Entries are arranged in alphabetical order of Chinese characters;
3. Homophones are arranged in order of tone;
4. If tones are the same, they are arranged by stroke order;
5. For multi-character terms with identical first characters, they are arranged in order of the second character's pinyin; if the second characters are also identical, they are arranged in order of the third character's pinyin, and so on;
6. If there are multiple corresponding English terms, they are arranged in alphabetical order of the first letter of each English word, separated by semicolons; if the first letters are identical, they are arranged in order of the second letter, and so on; if the first words are identical, they are arranged in order of the first letter of the second word, and so on;
7. If two or more corresponding English terms include synonyms, near-synonyms, or variant forms that express the same content, and do not affect comprehension, these terms are connected in alphabetical order with (forward slashes);
8. If the corresponding English term has an abbreviated form, the abbreviation in parentheses is added after the full form;
9. If the corresponding English term is a verb, a particle in parentheses is added after the word;
10. Explanatory content in both Chinese and English terms is enclosed in square brackets;
11. Optional words in Chinese entries are enclosed in parentheses;
12. For proper nouns, the first letter of the English term is capitalized.
