At 12:30 PM on July 9, 2001, an open "university" composed of renowned scholars and teachers officially began its classes. It was a specialized classroom with strong academic focus, created by CCTV's Science & Education Channel. Thus, a magnificent and fragrant classroom, built with the efforts of television professionals, was born. What was its name? "Baijia Jiangtan" (The Forum of 100 Scholars).
On this forum, we presented solemn yet elegant, profound yet graceful rituals of learning, disciplines, and academia. "Baijia Jiangtan" was our television professionals' first large-scale daily themed lecture-style program. It transformed the millennium-old classroom with the changing of light, adorning it anew and delivering its teachings to thousands of households through the speed of electricity. The voices, appearances, and profound knowledge of scholars and students shone with vitality and spirit in the television lectures, leaving an indelible mark on the era: Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Cheng Siwei came, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Lu Yongxiang came, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Long Yongtu came, and hundreds of experts and scholars like Yang Chenning, Lee Tsung-Dao, Ding Zhongzhong, Lam Kamchoe, Wu Wenjun, Bai Chunli, Li Yining, Dai Ruiwei, and Feng Jicai joined our "forum." Through the wings of light and electricity, they transmitted the essence of their thoughts to those who loved knowledge.
