Features: This book is written specifically for candidates taking the 2006 postgraduate entrance examination, following the "National Postgraduate Entrance Examination English Test Syllabus (Non-English Majors)." It serves as both a detailed explanation of the syllabus vocabulary and a summary of the complex exam questions, acting as a bridge between the word list and actual exam questions. Below, we introduce the features and functions of this book according to the syllabus requirements.
I. Syllabus Requirements
The "National Postgraduate Entrance Examination English Test Syllabus (Non-English Majors)" requires candidates to master approximately 5,500 English words and 380 common verb phrases. Among these, 2,500 words are expected to be mastered proficiently, meaning they can be accurately used in language communication, writing, or translation. The remaining words are to be recognized and understood in reading. Based on this requirement of the syllabus—the only guiding document candidates must follow—we have highlighted two key features in this book, "2006 Postgraduate Entrance Exam English Vocabulary," and fully realized the six functions of the key vocabulary.
II. Features of the Book
1. Aligned with the Syllabus
This book includes all words and phrases in the syllabus and covers all vocabulary in past exam questions. The content includes entries, phonetic symbols, morphological analysis, contextual definitions, English example sentences, Chinese translations, synonyms, near-synonyms, derived words, usage distinctions, and antonyms.
2. Emphasis on Key Vocabulary
The book provides detailed explanations for the 2,500 words and phrases that the syllabus requires candidates to master proficiently, including all the items listed above. For the remaining 3,000 words that require recognition, the book lists their entries, phonetic symbols, and Chinese translations.
III. Functions of the Book
1. Phonetic Symbols
Phonetic symbols are an effective tool for memorizing words. Knowing the pronunciation of any word allows candidates to easily recall its spelling by applying pronunciation rules. Especially with the addition of listening tests, accurately mastering the pronunciation of common words has become particularly important.
2. Morphological Analysis and Derived Words
The syllabus requires candidates to "master derived words formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to the words in this vocabulary list." Morphological analysis helps analyze the structure and meaning of words through roots, prefixes, and suffixes, facilitating memorization of both spelling and meaning. It also enables candidates to "guess" the meanings of unfamiliar words.
3. English Example Sentences
The Chinese translations of entry definitions may not fully convey the exact meaning compared to the English definitions. English example sentences help candidates better grasp the nuances of words, master their "accurate use in language communication and writing," and also increase reading volume, expand vocabulary, and enhance the ability to "recognize and understand" non-key words in reading.
4. Chinese Translations
We provide Chinese translations for all English example sentences to help candidates improve their ability to "accurately use" the key vocabulary required for language communication or translation, while also training their translation skills.
5. Synonyms and Near-Synonyms
This is one of the most important parts of vocabulary testing. Although recent postgraduate entrance exams have eliminated dedicated vocabulary questions, they still place great emphasis on the differentiation of synonyms and near-synonyms in cloze tests.
6. Antonyms
Although there are relatively few of these items, from the perspective of test setting, antonyms are also necessary to master. This book helps candidates systematically review the syllabus vocabulary from these aspects, thereby comprehensively and effectively improving their exam performance.
