Features: There are two basic frameworks available for choice: one is based on philosophers, and the other is based on problems. Both frameworks have their advantages and disadvantages. This book adopts a hybrid arrangement: the first four chapters discuss the background of the philosophy of language and briefly introduce some fundamental topics in the philosophy of language. The middle nine chapters sequentially elaborate on some of the most important 20th-century philosophers of language, from Saussure to Chomsky. Subsequently, Chapter 14 briefly introduces the views of previous philosophers on the problem of proper names and then explores the fundamental problem of reference/significance in the philosophy of language. Chapter 15 briefly introduces the views of several late-stage philosophers in the development of the philosophy of language on metaphor and then discusses the fundamental problem of literal/implicit meaning. Chapter 16 comprehensively examines the relationship between language and reality, outlining Professor Chen Jiaying's perspectives on some major issues in the philosophy of language.
