Features: "Dictionary of Transportation" is a large-scale comprehensive reference book in the field of transportation. It was organized and compiled by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government Transportation Office in collaboration with the Shanghai Economic Society starting in 1993. In 2002, during the reform of government institutional systems, most functions and related work of the original Transportation Office, including the compilation of "Dictionary of Transportation," were taken over by the Shanghai Municipal Commission for Urban Planning and Management. The compilation of this dictionary was guided by Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Important Thought of "Three Represents," adhering to the principles of seeking truth from facts and keeping pace with the times. It emphasized learning from the experiences and achievements of similar dictionaries while also focusing on collecting and accumulating new concepts and terminology generated during the process of transportation development. The goal was to ensure that the selected entries were comprehensive and concise, with accurate and brief definitions, and that the adopted information was detailed and reliable. It aimed to reflect the characteristics of China and gain recognition from experts in the transportation field.
The editorial committee of the dictionary was divided into eight specialized sections: Railway Transportation, Highway Transportation, Waterway Transportation, Air Transportation, Pipeline Transportation, Urban Transportation, Postal Services, and Telecommunications. Each section was composed of professors and experts from Shanghai Railway College (now merged into Tongji University), Xi'an Highway College (now Chang'an University), Shanghai Maritime College (now Shanghai Maritime University), Tianjin Civil Aviation College, Beijing Petroleum University, Shanghai Urban Construction College (now merged into Tongji University), and Nanjing Postal College.
The structure of the dictionary's entries is divided into two aspects under the category of transportation: general transportation and communication. It includes: General Transportation, Railway Transportation, Highway Transportation, Waterway Transportation, Air Transportation, Pipeline Transportation, Urban Transportation, General Communication, Postal Services, and Telecommunications. The main text of the dictionary is organized by professional categories, with a classified index at the beginning and two indexes at the end—arranged by the stroke order of Chinese characters and by alphabetical order of English letters—to facilitate reader.
During the compilation process, the dictionary received support and attention from leaders and relevant personnel in the transportation and postal telecommunications departments of the State Council and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Additionally, specific guidance and assistance in setting up entries and structuring categories were provided by institutions such as the Comprehensive Transportation Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Shanghai Comprehensive Transportation Planning Research Institute, the Shanghai Aerospace Technology Research Institute, the Shanghai Postal Design Research Institute, and the Petroleum Processing Research Institute of East China University of Science and Technology. The former leaders and experts of the Shanghai Economic Society, Shanghai Ci Shu Press, and participating institutions also made significant contributions, for which sincere gratitude is expressed here.
Given the rapid advancement of science and technology and the accelerated updates of relevant laws, regulations, and regulations since China's entry into the WTO, readers are advised to exercise caution when consulting or referencing data and information in this dictionary. We sincerely hope and look forward to feedback from cadres at all levels engaged in transportation, management personnel, faculty and students of relevant disciplines in universities and colleges, as well as the broader public involved in transportation, so that revisions and supplements can be made for future editions.
