Reading instruction in Chinese for foreign learners begins with recognizing Chinese characters. "To read, one must first recognize characters." Chinese characters are the written symbols of the Chinese language, and learning Chinese requires learning Chinese characters. For most beginners in Chinese, recognizing and memorizing characters is very difficult. Therefore, a certain number of characters are arranged for students to recognize in each lesson's section. When Chinese characters (characters) are given, their pronunciation, meaning (strictly speaking, translations of words rather than characters) are also provided simultaneously, with the aim of helping students establish the connection between the form, sound, and meaning of Chinese characters.
2. Words are composed of characters, and words form phrases. Words and phrases are the units that constitute sentences. Cultivating and training students' ability to recognize words and phrases is the step in cultivating reading ability. The recognition of words and phrases must also combine form, sound, and meaning, while also paying attention to exercises in aspects such as word stress and pauses.
3. The difficulty students face in recognizing and memorizing characters lies in their insufficient understanding of the characteristics of Chinese character forms and the composition of characters. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce them to some knowledge about Chinese characters, such as: the basic strokes of Chinese characters, the radicals and components of Chinese characters, as well as the structure of Chinese characters, which will help students recognize and memorize characters faster and better.
4. Recognizing characters, words, and sentences is the foundation for reading texts (paragraphs or passages). Therefore, starting from Lesson 19, each lesson includes "Character-Word-Phrase-Sentence Expansion Exercises" in the "Character-Word-Phrase-Sentence" section. Most of the sentences in these exercises are common ones, and most of them are extended from the words of the current lesson. Some will even appear again in the following dialogue or short passage. The purpose of doing this is to train students to gradually expand their visual range, preparing them for future reading. The text includes both dialogues and short passages. For the treatment of the text, it is recommended that teachers guide students to read aloud, allowing them to practice pronunciation, intonation, pauses, and stress through imitation. This also helps students better understand the text.
5. Exercises are an important part of this textbook. We have designed exercises related to characters, words, and phrases in the exercises. The purpose is still to help students recognize and memorize characters.
6. This book includes an "Exercises Outside the Classroom" section, which is designed for students to review and consolidate the content learned in class.
