Beijing is a historic and culturally rich city with over 3,000 years of urban history. Five dynasties—Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing—successively established their capitals here, leaving behind countless precious cultural relics and historic sites that represent Chinese civilization. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, Beijing has served as the capital, becoming the political, cultural, and international exchange center of the nation. In the past half-century, Beijing has undergone tremendous changes and has developed into a world-renowned metropolis. During this period, we have accumulated a wealth of valuable experiences and also learned many lessons. I believe these will become a precious asset in our continued progress.
After nearly two years of effort, the "Historical and Cultural City Beijing" series, organized and compiled by the Beijing Municipal Planning Commission, the Beijing Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, and the Beijing Dongyi Cultural Exchange Center, is about to be published by Beijing Publishing House. This series follows the historical and cultural protected areas within Beijing's old city, complemented by concise and vivid text and images. It examines the history and present of Beijing's urban construction from the perspective of urban planning, exploring ways to integrate traditional culture with modern life. It is a meaningful endeavor. I am delighted with this achievement!
With the 2008 Olympic Games approaching, I am confident that this series will attract increasing attention from domestic and international readers and will serve as an excellent resource for them to gain a deeper understanding of Beijing and experience its unique charm.
