Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: What is multiculturalism? What are its historical and theoretical backgrounds? As an ideology, what are the characteristics of multiculturalism? How is multiculturalism connected to educational reform, public policy, religious practice, national identity, cultural diversity, minority rights, the capitalist economic system, and more? In the context of globalization, what are the paradoxes of multiculturalism? What is the future of multiculturalism? Watson's Multiculturalism describes, reflects on, and evaluates the debates surrounding these questions, attempting to provide clear explanations and precise answers. In Watson's view, multiculturalism is first and foremost a cultural perspective. Second, it is a historical perspective. Third, it is an educational philosophy. Watson argues that the richness of multiculturalism's meaning stems from the complexity of its origins. It should be noted that one of the features of this book is that Watson thoroughly examines the different attitudes and emphases of various countries towards multiculturalism in different political and historical contexts, including China's history and reality. It must be pointed out that due to the author's different perspectives, observation angles, and value standards, his evaluation of China's relevant policies may not be entirely objective. To preserve the authenticity of the academic discussion, the editors of this book made only minor revisions in a few places and largely retained the original form. However, they do not necessarily agree with some of the author's viewpoints. It should be reminded to readers that while we adopt a humble and inclusive attitude towards Western studies, we must not lose our critical spirit. On one hand, we should accommodate different voices; on the other hand, we should read critically and rationally distinguish. In the process of reading, we should take the essence and discard the errors, making appropriate choices.
