Features: This book has been meticulously revised and compiled based on the newly published "National Master's Entrance Examination English Syllabus (Non-English Major)" by the Ministry of Education (hereinafter referred to as "English Syllabus"). The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) after each entry in this book has been re-verified according to Daniel Jones's "English Pronouncing Dictionary," aiming to maintain consistency and authority in the pronunciation of new words. The "English Pronouncing Dictionary" includes many entries with multiple pronunciations, and this book selects only one of them (or the first two for some entries). This book can be used as a self-study guide for postgraduate entrance exams and as teaching material for English preparation courses. With the deep appreciation of candidates, the book has consistently ranked among the top-selling books in China since its release, which has greatly encouraged us and deepened our sense of responsibility. The newly published "English Syllabus" by the Ministry of Education stipulates that the total vocabulary for the postgraduate entrance exam English test (including the 370 new words added in 2005) is 5,500 words. However, according to many candidates' feedback and repeated verification, the number of words and phrases in the annual postgraduate entrance exam English test is slightly larger than the total number of words and phrases specified in the "English Syllabus." To selectively expand the vocabulary and include all the words from actual postgraduate entrance exam English tests, we referred to authoritative English reference books both domestically and internationally, combined with new words that appeared in past exams, and carefully selected an additional 3,120 new words (the total vocabulary of this book is 7,459 words), making it more comprehensive, practical, and authoritative. Additionally, the book includes high-frequency words that have appeared frequently in recent newspapers and magazines, such as "jihad" (=holy war) and "roadmap." The newly added words in this book frequently appear in postgraduate entrance exam English tests, which perfectly proves that the newly added words are not redundant or trivial. To facilitate candidates, the book has added the following content based on the newly published "English Syllabus":
1. Added International Phonetic Alphabet: The original "English Syllabus" did not include the IPA. This book adds the IPA to help candidates master the correct pronunciation of new words and memorize them quickly.
2. Added Word Formation Rules: Mastering word formation rules is an important way to quickly expand vocabulary. Remembering a root word and adding relevant prefixes and suffixes can help you grasp a series of derivative words related to the root.
3. Appropriately Added Example Sentences: The original "English Syllabus" did not include example sentences. To help candidates understand the usage of various words, each word (except for a few exceptions) is accompanied by example sentences that illustrate its specific usage, aiming to be concise and to the point without unnecessary repetition. Most of these example sentences are from famous British and American writers, and their usage is highly authoritative. The example sentences highlight frequently tested words, words with multiple meanings, and words with different parts of speech, making them more.
4. Added New Words and Phrases: The purpose is to expand the coverage of new words, ensuring that all words that appear in actual postgraduate entrance exam English tests can be found in this book.
5. Added Part-of-Speech Transparency: In addition to the parts of speech marked in the newly published "English Syllabus," the book also specially marks: vt. (transitive verb), vi. (intransitive verb), c. (countable noun), u. (uncountable noun).
6. Added Synonyms and Usage Differences: It highlights the usage differences of frequently tested synonyms.
