Features: Analysis of difficult and long sentences + intensive reading combined with extensive reading new question types
This book includes five parts. The first and second parts are for candidates to use for intensive reading, the third part is for extensive reading, the fourth part carefully prepares three sets of questions (including reading comprehension types) for candidates to test their own level, and the fifth part analyzes and summarizes the reading comprehension problem-solving strategies, which are deeply popular among candidates.
The book has been designed accordingly in each part. The first part selects 100 articles covering some common themes in postgraduate entrance exams, translating and annotating the difficult and long sentences, and classifying 80 of them into postgraduate vocabulary and other vocabulary. This part is for candidates to use for intensive reading, and it uses intensive reading to link comprehensive review of reading comprehension, translation, cloze, and writing. The specific steps for intensive reading are: (1) Read an article and complete the questions within 12-15 minutes. (2) Compare the answers but do not rush to read the explanations. Think about why you answered correctly or incorrectly on your own. (3) Read the explanations and pay attention to the differences between your problem-solving approach and the approach in the explanations. Summarize the rules and correct your thinking. (4) Identify the difficult and long sentences in the article, clarify the main structure of the article, and then analyze and understand the long sentences based on the previous and next sentences. If you feel awkward about understanding the long sentence, you should translate it yourself and then compare it with the translation and annotations or the translation of this sentence in the explanations (all translations of long sentences can be found in these two parts). Never just translate it verbally. (5) Focus on memorizing the postgraduate vocabulary and phrases (vocabulary are arranged in the order of appearance). We selected these vocabulary based on the syllabus, but we are more concerned about their usage frequency. We have also carefully selected their meanings. Candidates must be familiar with these vocabulary and meanings. We also advocate that candidates try to guess the meaning of new words in the article before looking at the vocabulary list. The author does not recommend candidates to memorize the vocabulary listed in other vocabulary. (6) If the knowledge involved in a certain article is relatively unfamiliar to candidates, they should also summarize and understand the content involved in the article from a knowledge perspective. (7) Select some good sentence patterns and phrases from the article for memorization, for use in writing, but keep it concise and selective.
The second part is about new question types in reading comprehension. The guidance in this section is only a summary of the problem-solving strategies. When reading the explanations in the third section, you must constantly summarize the problem-solving clues based on the summary in this section. The 17 sets of questions in the third part are mainly for students to use for extensive reading. It is recommended that candidates complete each set within 50-60 minutes. After each set of questions, there is an explanation. The explanation only aims to highlight the key points, leaving the rest for candidates to think and summarize on their own. This part is intended to further improve candidates' reading ability, expand their knowledge and vocabulary. Candidates do not need to read the articles intensively, just use them as reading comprehension exercises. Of course, candidates should also spend more time on articles that are more difficult and newer in content.
The fourth part consists of 3 sets of simulated questions and explanations, including new question types in reading comprehension. After the intensive and extensive reading training, candidates can comprehensively test their own level in this part. Therefore, we suggest that candidates spend 75-85 minutes to complete each set of questions. This way, you can not only test whether your time management exceeds the specified time but also evaluate your level based on the average score of these 3 sets of questions.
The fifth part provides a detailed analysis of the characteristics of reading comprehension in the previous year's exam questions. Based on summarizing the previous year's exam questions, it explains and analyzes the problem-solving strategies through examples, training candidates' reading comprehension skills for exams, helping them grasp the important information needed for answering questions, and cultivating their ability to guess the meaning of words based on the context. The author suggests that candidates first read this part before reading the other parts.
