Moll Flanders was born in Newgate Prison, with her mother being a thief about to be transported to Virginia. This abandoned girl grew up in the home of the compassionate Mayor of Colchester, unaware of her own background. At the age of 15, she was raped, but she later married honorably and turned her fate around. However, after her husband's death, she remarried multiple times—five times in total, including marrying a married man on a few occasions, and engaging in sexual relationships with various people for money. Once, she visited Virginia and discovered that her current husband was her half-brother, so she left him and returned to England alone. After living through extreme poverty, she became an exceptionally skilled thief but was eventually caught and, like her mother, was sent to Newgate Prison. In prison, she met James, a highwayman sentenced to death, who was one of her most beloved ex-husbands. Both were transported to Virginia. They managed to bring all their ill-gotten wealth with them. Upon arriving in Virginia, Moll discovered that she had inherited a plantation from her mother. From then on, she and James spent the rest of their lives in the atmosphere of getting rich and reforming their past misdeeds.
