Quanyuanwen basically collects articles written in Chinese during the Yuan Dynasty, including poems, ci poems, classical texts, folk songs, proverbs, and all other prose, parallel prose, and fu poetry. The time frame for the collected writers follows the principle of starting with the Jin Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty. Writers from the former Jin territory are limited to those active before the second year of the Tianxing era of Jin Aizong (1234), while writers from the former Southern Song territory are limited to those active before the second year of the Xiangxing era of Southern Song Zhao Bing (1297). The lower limit is set by the twenty-eighth year of the Zhizhi era of Yuan Shundi (1368).
