Features: This volume aims to concisely present outstanding works of modern Chinese short fiction since the early 20th century, enabling a broad readership to gain a relatively comprehensive understanding of the basic characteristics of modern Chinese short fiction with less time, while also providing a valuable selection for researchers. The true formation of modern Chinese short fiction occurred during the May Fourth Movement. Writing novels in vernacular Chinese was a significant cultural and social revolution at the time and a crucial part of the modernization process of Chinese fiction. During the editorial process, the editors focused on selecting works by writers who made unique contributions to modern Chinese short fiction, fully considering the inclusion of diverse creative tendencies and artistic styles, and carefully chosen recognized representative works and highly accomplished pieces. Some long-neglected but highly accomplished writers were also included in the selection. The works included are based on their date of public publication or release. Each selected piece is preceded by a brief introduction to the author's life and artistic achievements. In the modern short fiction section, the works are arranged in chronological order by the author's birth year. This volume includes short fiction by writers such as Ouyang Shan, Sun Li, Wang Zengqi, Zhu Zhijuan, and Zong Pu, featuring selected works such as In the Soft Seat Car, The Piano and the Flute, The Seven-Li Tea Shop, Lily Flower, and Head in the Mire.
