In medieval Scotland, enemy forces invade, and nobles betray. Macbeth and Banquo, two great generals, turn the tide in battle and defeat the rebels. At the moment of victory, three witches appear, revealing prophecies that change their destinies. King Duncan transfers the title and lands of the traitorous Lord Cawdor to Macbeth, and the prophecies begin to come true. Soon after, King Duncan declares his son Malcolm as the heir to the throne. Macbeth's ambition swells, and with his wife's encouragement, they conspire to murder King Duncan and seize the throne. Malcolm and his five sons are forced to flee. Fearing Banquo might reveal the witches' prophecies, Macbeth also orders Banquo's murder.
But why did the prophecy state that Banquo's descendants would become kings instead of Macbeth's? Will the prophecies come true in their entirety? The two murders leave Macbeth restless, tormented by the ghosts that haunt him.
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies. Shakespeare was a great dramatist and poet of the European Renaissance. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a town in central England, to a family of merchants. Around 1590, he joined a theater troupe and worked as a horse groom, a theater assistant, and an actor before beginning his career as a playwright. He left behind 37 surviving plays, two long poems, and 154 sonnets, proving himself a prolific writer.
