Features: The Maya's understanding of the universe and their astronomical achievements gave Maya cities a clear sense of orientation, reflecting the planning of a mature civilization. Maya city-states were not only administrative centers and residences of the royal family but also religious, ceremonial, and economic hubs. The centers of Maya city-states experienced cycles of rise and decline, with architectural grandeur and achievements concentrated mainly in sites such as Palenque, Copán, Tikal, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, and Mayapán. Both the Maya and the Egyptians were fond of building pyramids. Egyptian pyramids were hollow, simple in design, and devoid of surface decoration, while Maya pyramids featured stepped structures, often with temples at the top, and were generally hollow as well. However, the tomb of King Bahlam I was discovered in the foundation of the Hieroglyphic Temple at Palenque. The Maya had a natural affinity for stone construction, which required more time and effort. Without a strong religious spirit, it is hard to imagine how such a large number of buildings were accomplished. No wonder people, when viewing the grand Maya sites with extensive stone architecture, marvel at whether such structures could have been built with the technology and logistical conditions of the time. In Tikal's architecture, the religious aspect is particularly evident. The imposing scale of the exterior buildings contrasts sharply with the narrow spaces inside. The deities were the priority, and the comfort of human inhabitants seemed irrelevant. Maya buildings were often adorned with vibrant colors. Over time and due to the destruction of the tropical rainforest, only faint traces of paint remain on some structures, and the original luster has faded. Through long-term artistic practice, the Maya understood the power of color. The brilliant decorative colors on their buildings made them stand out against the green tropical jungle, reflecting the glory of the city-states.
