It provides historical knowledge, interesting anecdotes, and vivid character portrayals, while also deeply and clearly revealing the emergence and development of modern mathematical thought. The first edition of this book won the National Outstanding Popular Science Work Award, with the section "The Troublesome Parallel Postulate" selected for inclusion in junior high school Chinese self-reading textbooks. The republication adds three chapters on Poincaré, Hilbert, and Huárolóng, thus more comprehensively outlining the development of the history of mathematics in the world and China.
