In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, the court was corrupt. Cao Cao, who rose to power by suppressing the Yellow Turban Rebellion, gradually unified the northern region after years of warfare. The Battle of Red Cliffs, where "the rudder and oars turned to ash and smoke," saw Cao Cao suffer a decisive defeat. This setback to his ambition of unifying the nation led to the formation of the Three Kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu. Amidst the grand and fierce struggles, the heroes of the Three Kingdoms fully demonstrated their ambitions and passions.
The wise Zhuge Liang, the benevolent Liu Bei, the loyal Guan Yu, the straightforward Zhang Fei, the brave Zhao Yun, the cunning Cao Cao, the shrewd Sima Yi, the talented but narrow-minded Zhou Yu, and the upright Lu Su—all these vividly portrayed characters showcased their political strategies, military talents, and extraordinary personal bonds, leaving us profound historical lessons and reflections on life.
The author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Luo Guanzhong, was a person of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, also known by the pen name Huahai Sanren. He was a versatile writer, creating novels, dictionaries, and operas. The era in which Luo Guanzhong lived was marked by intense and complex national and class contradictions. Influenced by the great historical turmoil, he infused his ideals into the works he wrote. Additionally, he authored other novels such as Chronicles of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Romance of the Remnants of the Tang and Five Dynasties, and The Three Kingdoms Subdue the Demon.
