Features: The publication of this book rekindled my interest in language research, which had been interrupted for decades. Impulsively, I decided to write a comprehensive monograph on sociophonetic phenomena for non-linguistics readers. Those years were the busiest and most chaotic of my life, and I could only use the quiet hours of the midnight to cultivate my "private plot." Writing was very hard: It took more than two years of late-night work to complete the first draft of over 200,000 words. When the draft was finished, I found it to be a messy, dogmatic, and ragged manuscript that completely contradicted my original intentions.
