Excerpt: Preventing Subject Blinking Most photographers have experienced this: When taking a portrait, even with perfect lighting and a good pose, the subject's eyes will suddenly squint nervously just before pressing the shutter. If not careful, you might end up with a photo where the eyes are fully or partially closed. The usual solution is to remind the subject to focus and then quickly press the shutter. This method works for most subjects, but it may not be effective for those who blink habitually. Even counting methods, like telling the subject to blink when they reach "3" but actually pressing the shutter at "2," often fail. This is because DSLR cameras retract the mirror before the shutter opens, and the sound and movement of the mirror can easily be detected by the subject, causing them to blink nervously.
We can try two methods to solve this problem. One is to gently tap the camera, tripod, or something else at the moment of pressing the shutter, deliberately making the subject blink first, and then quickly press the shutter. The second method is to use a remote shutter release. When the subject is fully focused, lightly press the remote halfway to raise the mirror, wait for the subject to blink a few times, and then seize the moment to press the shutter fully. Additionally, try to avoid making the subject stare directly at the lens. Instead, have them look slightly to the side of the lens, which can help prevent or reduce blinking.
