Features: There are many outstanding contemporary Chinese writers, but this series only includes four: Yu Qiuwei, Jia Pingwa, Liu Xinwu, and Zhao Lihong. They are all renowned contemporary writers. Liu Xinwu and Jia Pingwa are northern writers, and their works mostly reflect the lives of northern cities and rural areas; Yu Qiuwei and Zhao Lihong are southern writers, and they mostly write about southern cities and rural life. Students can see that the writing themes and styles of northern and southern writers differ greatly, which is beneficial for broadening their knowledge. The selected essays in this book are all masterpieces from their works, while also considering students' knowledge, life experiences, living environments, and artistic cultivation. When selecting works, we took into account that essays are a common literary genre for students and a popular literary style that they enjoy reading and writing. Similarly, essays are a literary genre that is close to life, can quickly reflect life and the author's thoughts and emotions, and are easy for students to read, understand, and absorb. At the same time, they are also easy to learn and apply the absorbed knowledge to their own writing practice. The four masterpieces included in this series each have their own unique writing styles, with distinct artistic personalities. Some are expressive and passionate, excelling in lyricism; some are profound and restrained, with concise writing that focuses on philosophical reflection; some are skilled in storytelling, using small incidents to explore the essence of life; and some face life directly, depicting the hardships of life to make readers feel the challenges of the journey. In terms of language expression, these works are diverse—sometimes solemn, sometimes free-spirited, sometimes simple, sometimes humorous, sometimes subtle, sometimes passionate. In short, they vary from person to person, from text to text, from time to time, from place to place, and even from the author's writing mood. All of these are endless variations. However, there is one characteristic that all the selected works share: they reflect the social landscape and the spirit of the times, with sincere emotions and vivid, lively, fluent, and concise language. By reading and analyzing these exemplary essays, readers can appreciate the essence of writing.
