Lectures Notes by Renowned Scholars

Author: Zhu Yingren
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2004-10-01
Features: The author has compiled teaching notes on the brushwork, ink techniques, composition, and analysis of paintings, as well as the relationship between calligraphy and painting, from the three masters Pan Tianshou, Wu Fuzhi, and Zhu Lesan. Additionally, the author has included their own perspectives and compiled them into this book for reference. The author is Professor Zhu Yingren, a renowned painter at the China Academy of Art. The notes primarily draw from the author's study materials from back then, recording spontaneous discussions by the teachers on various topics. Some notes consist of brief remarks, while others are recollections from later reflections. Given the author's limited understanding at the time, it is certain that the original words of the teachers cannot be fully conveyed in many places. Moreover, the author only focused on personal memoranda back then and did not anticipate the needs of today. Many sections lack the names of the instructors or the dates and locations of the lectures, which are now even harder to determine. Fortunately, these masters, though each possessing unique styles and artistic expressions, hold similar views on the essentials of Chinese painting, with only slight variations in emphasis on specific points. This does not significantly affect the core message, and the readers can discern the nuances on their own. The notes are not verbatim records of the teachers' spoken words but rather reflect the main ideas of their teachings, sometimes interspersed with the author's personal reflections and thoughts. Therefore, it is more appropriate to present them as notes. As a note, it has been updated with the author's own perspectives in light of the changing times, aiming to provide better reference and research material for fellow practitioners.
