Features: An Indispensable Work for Researching Chinese Buddhism
The Great Canon of the Pure Land School is an indispensable work for researching Chinese Buddhism. Throughout the history of promoting the Pure Land method, the masters of the Pure Land tradition have written numerous important works, which are crucial documents for studying the theory and history of Chinese Pure Land Buddhism. Due to the passage of time and the vicissitudes of history, many of these important documents have not been preserved to this day. The printed Buddhist canons of past dynasties, including the modernly published Chinese Buddhist Canon, primarily include scriptures from the Western tradition, leaving incomplete the works of Chinese monks who expounded Buddhist scriptures. However, these latter works are essential materials for researching Chinese Buddhism. To systematically preserve these documents and make them accessible to society, we have compiled and published a selection of these works under the title The Great Canon of the Pure Land School. The materials collected in this canon span from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the modern era, comprising one hundred and one works, which are divided into four parts: 1) The Sutras and Treatises Belonging to the Tradition; 2) Interpretations of Sutras and Treatises; 3) Works of the Masters; 4) Biographies and Genealogies, each further arranged in chronological order. The set is divided into sixteen volumes. Due to the limitations of the compilers and various conditions, any errors or omissions are respectfully acknowledged for correction.
The Pure Land School originated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty when Huayan founded the Lotus Society for Reciting the Name of Amida, and it is one of the thirteen schools of Chinese Buddhism. It later spread to Japan and Korea, becoming an international Buddhist tradition. This book compiles documents related to the Pure Land School found in the historical Chinese Buddhist canons, including four parts: the Sutras and Treatises Belonging to the Tradition, Interpretations of Sutras and Treatises, Works of the Masters, and Biographies and Genealogies. These are arranged in chronological order of translation, starting with the Threefold Samadhi Sutra translated by Zhi Lujie and Zhu Fosuo in 179 CE, and ending with the Commentary on the Mahayana Infinite Life Sutra by the venerable Huang Nianzu in 1988, supplemented by fragments of Pure Land scriptures found in Dunhuang and Turpan documents.
