Gradually, they spiraled upward toward the heavens, perhaps reaching the sky to be heard by the gods. "Why do the Miao people sing in the valleys?" Before recounting the legends, the elders of the Miao tribe would always ask the children this question. The children would always answer loudly: "To let the phoenix hear!"
