Features: The mission of the World Bank is to fight poverty and achieve sustainable results. Improving environmental quality, enhancing natural resource management, and maintaining global ecosystems are the most important measures to achieve this goal. Good environmental management can improve the living, health, and safety conditions of humans today and in the future. To achieve these lasting effects, we need sound baseline data that can help us set priorities for development goals and balance the pace of development to benefit environmental sustainability. The Green Data Handbook is a step toward this effort. Under the headings of Agriculture, Forests, Biodiversity, Energy, Emissions and Pollution, Water and Sanitation Facilities, and National Accounts, the book provides more than 200 key indicators related to the environment and closely linked to humans for over 200 countries and regions. Although these data may have gaps or shortcomings, we still hope they can inspire decision-makers at all levels to use this data and seek out and fill the gaps for their own countries. The Green Data Handbook was compiled from the 2003 World Development Indicators and its accompanying CD-ROM. It is the result of collaboration between the World Bank Development Economics Data Group and the Environment Department.
