Author: (Soviet) Sholokhov / Jin Ren and others
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2000-08-01
Features: The three translators of this collection are all outstanding translators in China. Jin Ren's translation of And Quiet Flows the Don has been revised several times since its publication before liberation and has also been comprehensively proofread by Jia Gang based on the new version determined before the author's death. Cao Ying's short stories and The Land That Was Once Forested have also undergone nearly half a century of refinement. Svetlana Sholokhova, the eldest daughter of Sholokhov, upon learning of the publication of the Sholokhov Collection in China, gladly wrote an article expressing congratulations. In her article, she said: "Chinese readers will be interested in reading Sholokhov's novels, short stories, essays, and speeches. Perhaps, they will come to love his protagonists, and naturally, through these works, they will better understand the Russian people, their character, and their not-so-easy history. This is exactly what I hope for."
In the late 1920s, Lu Xun, the founder of China's new literature, was the first to notice Sholokhov's works. In 1928, the first part of And Quiet Flows the Don was published in the October magazine. The following year, Lu Xun invited He Fei to translate it and personally proofread it, as well as wrote the preface. In 1931, the Chinese translation of And Quiet Flows the Don was published by Shanghai Shengzhou Guanguo Press as part of Lu Xun's "Modern Literature Series." From then on, almost every work by Sholokhov that was published was quickly introduced to China. Especially The Fate of a Man, which was published in Pravda, was translated into Chinese within the same month and appeared in two different translations, in Liberation Army Literature and Translated Works. This is a rare occurrence in the history of Chinese translation. Recently, the People's Literature Publishing House, following its plan, worked hard for four years to compile Sholokhov's works into a collection, which is the first time this has been done in China. The collection is divided into eight volumes and nearly includes the essence of the author's life's work.
Volume 1 includes twenty-seven short stories and novels. Volumes 2, 3, 4, and 5 are And Quiet Flows the Don. Volumes 6 and 7 are The Land That Was Once Forested. Volume 8 includes over seventy essays, literary theories, speeches, and twenty-four important letters, among which the correspondence with Stalin was only recently made public and is invaluable material for studying Sholokhov.
