While seemingly impossible, capturing the essence of animals in ink wash painting relies on their form. Therefore, to embody the spirit of animals, one must grasp their unique characteristics. The first feature of this book is to introduce the external features and habits of animals, analyzing the structural forms of various movements, offering concrete guidance.
Secondly, the book provides detailed explanations and demonstrations on the stylistic treatment of ink wash animal portraits. This section is the essence of the work, where many brushwork techniques for different animals are meticulously discussed—truly the wisdom of experience.
Third, from the integration of (partial) forms to the completion of the overall composition, from conceptualization to the final arrangement, this creative process has long been the core secret of the artist. Now, it is systematically broken down into layers and specifics, making the art of creation no longer mysterious.
Finally, the analysis of ink wash animal portraits serves as Gu Qingjiao’s creative insights, demonstrating how the techniques discussed earlier are applied in practice.
