Saul Bellow (born 1915), known as the spokesperson of contemporary American literature, was born in LaSalle, a suburb of Montreal, Canada. His parents were Jewish immigrants from St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1924, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois, to settle. In 1933, he enrolled at the University of Chicago and transferred to Northwestern University two years later, graduating in 1937 with a Bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology. Except for a period as an editor, journalist, and short-term service on a merchant ship, Bellow spent most of his time teaching at universities, currently serving as a professor at the University of Chicago and chair of the Committee on Social Thought. Since publishing his first short story, A Speckled Hen, and Other Stories, in 1941, Bellow has had a nearly six-decade-long creative career. The Adventures of Augie March was his breakthrough work, exploring the conflict between the essence of the self and the surrounding environment, and establishing a unique "Bellow style" in narrative art. Bellow is a writer rich in humanity. From his early work Henderson the Rain King, one can see his concern for the spiritual poverty in a wealthy society. Mr. Sammler's Planet and The Gift of the Magi reveal the spiritual decline and humanitarian crisis in contemporary society.
