This is a practical English dictionary designed for professional and technical personnel. The purpose of compiling this dictionary is that since 1996, the National Personnel Department has implemented a unified English examination for professional and technical titles across the country. For the vast number of professional and technical personnel working in various fields, this is both an opportunity and a challenge. It is an opportunity because it provides a chance to test their English proficiency; for those with relatively weaker English foundations, it is a challenge. However, to meet the new century and adapt to it, we must learn a foreign language and master it. During the compilation process, we followed the following principles:
1. Appropriate word selection. Theoretically, English vocabulary is vast. Even a native English speaker cannot claim to recognize all English words. Determining how many words to include in this dictionary was a challenging issue. Considering the requirements of the National Personnel Department for the English proficiency of professional and technical personnel, the vocabulary in this dictionary is determined according to the requirements of the New National Professional and Technical Personnel English Proficiency Examination Syllabus. At the same time, it also references the New College English Vocabulary Lists for CET-4 and CET-6.
2. Learning and mastering a word involves not only knowing how to spell it but also being able to pronounce it. Only in this way can one remember it accurately and firmly, avoiding "silent English." For this reason, each entry in this dictionary is marked with New International Phonetic Alphabet.
3. Learning English is not just about being able to spell and pronounce words; the most important thing is to know how to use them. Simply memorizing words is meaningless—words are learned quickly but forgotten just as quickly. For this reason, example sentences are provided for each sense of every entry. These sentences are not only typical but also reflect the usage of the vocabulary.
4. To enhance memory retention, we have provided synonyms and antonyms for the definitions of most entries. In terms of layout, this dictionary is self-contained. Parts of speech are presented in abbreviated form, with the following meanings:
- art. Article
- n. Noun
- pron. Pronoun
- a. Adjective
- ad. Adverb
- prep. Preposition
- num. Numeral
- conj. Conjunction
- int. Interjection
- aux. v. Auxiliary verb
- vt. Transitive verb
- vi. Intransitive verb
- v. Indicates that the verb can be used as both a transitive and an intransitive verb
- (=) Indicates synonym
- (≠) Indicates antonym
In addition to the chief editor, other contributors to this dictionary include Li Zhenglin, Wang Huafeng, Lin Zhiguang, Ma Xiaokang, and others. Due to the limited level of the compilers, errors and inaccuracies are inevitable. We welcome criticism and corrections from.
