When a girl told Sakuragi, "I like the basketball player Toda," it deeply wounded him. Upon entering high school, Sakuragi still couldn't bounce back, but at that moment, a girl named Akagi Haruna appeared before him. On the school corridor, Haruna asked with a pleasant voice, "Do you like basketball?" This question reignited the flame of passion in Sakuragi's heart. From that day on, Sakuragi thought of Haruna day and night, longing to go to and from school with her every day. By chance, Sakuragi had a one-on-one match with the team captain Akagi Tsuyoshi and surprisingly won. To win Haruna's favor, Sakuragi decided to join the basketball club. Sakuragi joined the Shohoku High School Basketball Club. However, the daily repetitive basic training made him complain constantly and often clash with the team captain, Akagi. After the practice match against the Ryonan team, the Shohoku team members worked even harder to qualify for the national league. Meanwhile, the delinquent Miyagi, who had been hospitalized due to a fight with a gang, returned to the team. Miyagi's return greatly boosted the team's strength. Unbeknownst to them, misfortune struck. Miyake, the leader of the gang, came to the gym with his followers to fight the basketball team in revenge for Miyagi. However, with the arrival of Sensei Anzai, Miyake finally decided to return to the team. Shohoku High School had a string of victories in the county competition and finally faced the strong team of Youkou in a fierce battle. By the end of the first half, the Shohoku team was down by 9 points.
