Features: Based on the author's experiences in research, teaching, and academic exchanges at renowned universities abroad, this book discusses the key aspects of building world-class universities from both conceptual and operational perspectives: the spiritual character of world-class universities; the core systems of top universities; how world-class universities recruit outstanding faculty; the interaction between talent pools and financial resources in top universities; the rise and fall of world-class universities and major powers; the challenges globalization poses to Chinese universities; and the international standards for reforming Chinese universities. The author's remarks have sparked and continue to spark lively discussions. The publication of this book will provide a reference point for those concerned with the present and future of Chinese universities. The book proposes that the rise and fall of universities are closely related to the rise and fall of major powers. From the 11th century to the present, wherever world-class universities have emerged, there has been a rise of a nation and the prosperity of a people. The rise of universities has brought about the prosperity of nations, and this is not just a Western phenomenon but a global one. Japan's most famous Tokyo University is a product of the Meiji Restoration. The predecessor of Peking University, the Imperial University, was a result of the Reform Movement, and its establishment marked China's entry into modern society. Since their inception, modern universities have embodied a spirit of universalism, reflected in the confidence that the world is their field of exploration and that talent from all over the world is at their disposal. It is precisely for this reason that one after another, diverse yet brilliant world-class universities have emerged. The faculty of world-class universities should come from all corners of the world, and their schools of thought should draw from various disciplines. In today's era of globalization, talent resources, financial resources, information resources, and more are rapidly flowing across borders. If you want to become an outstanding university, you must participate in competition on a global scale; otherwise, you will only be stuck in the slow lane and eventually slide down, making it difficult to climb back up. In the age of globalization, competition among universities, industries, companies, individuals, and systems is increasingly becoming transnational. If a country lacks the intellectual support of world-class universities and cannot continuously provide new ideas and knowledge, such a country can only occupy a lower or middle-lower position in the global division of labor.
