Features: Contains over 7,800 linguistic terms. The terms cover all branches of linguistics. Definitions are accurate and detailed, providing relevant background knowledge. Suitable for college students, graduate students, teachers, and researchers. This is a concise and practical comprehensive dictionary of linguistics, with over 7,800 entries covering fields such as general linguistics, grammar, phonetics, phonology, lexical semantics, semantics, rhetoric, stylistics, and writing systems.
From the perspective of the development of linguistic disciplines, the terms can be broadly categorized into three main aspects:
(1) Traditional terms—Classical grammarians extracted traditional grammatical terms based on prescriptive principles from well-defined structures in Indo-European languages. These terms have been passed down and evolved from ancient Greece to the present day.
(2) A large number of descriptive terms for historical linguistic changes established in the 19th century due to the flourishing development of historical-comparative linguistics.
(3) Terms created in the 20th century, with a focus on synchronic linguistics, descriptive linguistics, and structuralist linguistics, especially in the past 30 years, where transformational linguistics has emerged as a new theory in linguistic research. Some old terms have also been redefined or reinterpreted. The third category represents modern linguistic research trends and highly productive terms.
This dictionary adopts a balanced approach in its selection criteria, making it suitable for a wide range of users. In addition to well-known major languages, it also includes the names of many minor languages, providing brief explanations of their usage, genetic relationships, and affiliations. (The number of speakers of a language is a variable factor, and past approximate statistics may not fully reflect the current reality, so they are omitted. The translations of language names, except for well-known major languages, are mostly based on the Manual of Translations of World Ethnic Names published by the Commercial Press. A few are self-proposed by the editor.) It also provides brief introductions to famous linguistic schools abroad.
Since "language" and "literature" are generally inseparable, this dictionary also includes major terms in the field of language and literature that are closely related to language (few in number, such as drama, allegory, allusion, elegy, literature, poetics, poetry, etc.). Additionally, there are a few terms related to punctuation, audio-visual teaching, teaching equipment and tools, and logical thinking.
In summary, the target users of this dictionary include researchers and technical personnel in the field of linguistics and linguistic sciences, teachers and students of linguistics, language teachers in universities and secondary schools (including foreign language teachers), graduate students in linguistics, and individuals preparing to take entrance exams in linguistic fields, as well as others with an interest in linguistic research.
