Features: The book Fangyan Xiaojian provides a comprehensive summary of the research on Fangyan. Zhou's work uses the Song Dynasty Li Mengchuan edition as the base text, referencing the research findings of Qing Dynasty scholars such as Dai Zhen, Lu Wenchang, Liu Taigong, Wang Niansun, and Qian Yi, conducting meticulous comparisons and revisions to create a definitive edition that improved upon later versions. Professor Wu Xiaoling has also compiled an Index for Fangyan Xiaojian, which is appended to the book for easy reference. Many works have been written in the style of Fangyan throughout history, such as the Qing Dynasty Continuation of Fangyan by Hang Shijun. This book specifically collects scattered dialect terms from ancient texts before the Tang and Song dynasties to supplement Fangyan. Cheng Chensheng later wrote Corrections to the Continuation of Fangyan, Xu Naichang further added Another Supplement to the Continuation of Fangyan, all of which are works of this kind. Additionally, the modern scholar Zhang Taiyan wrote New Fangyan, which explains over 800 dialectal and colloquial terms, accompanied by analyses and etymological research, a new path in the study of dialects.
