Dong Qichang was born into a declining landlord family in Shanghai. At the age of 17, he dropped out of school and began studying painting at 23. By absorbing the strengths of others, he became one of the most famous calligraphers and painters, as well as art theorists of the late Ming Dynasty. In the history of literati painting, he is considered a milestone figure, achieving the status of a master. Dong Qichang engaged in painting while serving as an official, with a career spanning over 40 years across the Wanli, Taichang, Tianqi, and Chongzhen reigns. He was meticulous and adept at navigating political circles, continuously rising in rank. His representative works include "Highly Refined Scroll," "Snowy Mountains and Rivers," and "Wǎnluán Study." Especially "Wǎnluán Study," with its thick brushwork and majestic artistic spirit, represents the highest achievement of his literati painting.
