Features: "Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles" was the necessary path for ancient scholars to achieve success. However, Shen Zhou was an exception. Although he had read countless books, his life's journey never went beyond Wu Zhong, and he could not even talk about traveling ten thousand miles. This did not hinder him from achieving great success in painting and becoming the founding master of the Wu Men School. Shen Zhou excelled in landscape, flower-and-bird, and calligraphy. His flower-and-bird paintings started with the Song Dynasty style, transforming the meticulous and luxurious style into a refined and elegant one. He made pioneering contributions to the reform of Ming Dynasty freehand flower-and-bird painting, but his most outstanding achievement was undoubtedly in landscape painting. Shen Zhou's landscape paintings generally fall into two styles: meticulous and refined, and concise and simplified, which are known as "Fine Shen" and "Coarse Shen," respectively. The former was mostly created in his early years, primarily learning from Wang Meng. This style is represented by the middle-aged work "Lushan High," with dense, delicate, and elegant brushwork, a powerful and solemn atmosphere, and an ethereal quality that is particularly difficult to achieve. In his later years, Shen Zhou appeared in the "Coarse Shen" style, using a bald brush and central axis to express emotions on the spot. The mountains and rocks were mostly outlined with thick lines, showing their structure, then reinforced with rough lines to enhance their bone structure and form, and finally dotted with dark ink.
