Features: Chemistry is the science that studies the composition, preparation, properties, structure, application, and transformation of elements, compounds, and materials at the atomic and molecular level. Chemical engineering is the general term for chemical industry, chemical engineering, and chemical technology. It investigates the laws of chemical and physical changes in chemical industry production processes, seeks advanced and economically reasonable techniques, methods, processes, unit operations, and equipment to produce high-quality and cost-effective chemical products while meeting environmental protection and sustainable development requirements. Chemistry and chemical engineering are important components of natural sciences and the national economy. Today, with the rapid development of science and technology, chemistry and chemical engineering are continuously expanding their fields, penetrating more specialized disciplines, and increasing academic, technical, and trade exchanges with foreign countries. Especially since the 21st century, with the development of materials, biotechnology, and energy technology, the demand for improved quality of life, health, and environmental protection has led to the continuous emergence of new theories, substances, equipment, and technologies. In light of this, there is an increasing call for the publication of a comprehensive and authoritative English-Chinese bilingual dictionary of chemistry and chemical engineering, with precise and accurate naming. To meet the urgent needs of readers, our press organized the compilation of this large-scale 《English-Chinese Dictionary of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering》 (hereinafter referred to as 《Dictionary》). The 《Dictionary》 contains approximately 300,000 entries, covering concepts, terms, and various material names in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, and their related disciplines. It adheres to the principles of "comprehensiveness, novelty, and practicality." Within 40 specialized fields, all terms from core disciplines of chemistry and chemical engineering are included; terms from interdisciplinary and marginal disciplines are also included as much as possible; and terms related to the broader field of chemistry and chemical engineering as well as their application areas are also included. Both chemistry and chemical engineering are given equal importance, with consideration given to related disciplines. The interdisciplinary and marginal disciplines of chemistry and chemical engineering, high-tech fields, and continuously expanding application areas of chemistry and chemical engineering are all key areas for inclusion in the 《Dictionary》. The 《Dictionary》 extensively includes single words while also incorporating some highly specialized compound words that are difficult to translate directly, as well as commonly used abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes, and substituent names. To enhance the practicality of the entries, new terms are prioritized, with many entries sourced from professional literature and not limited to a single source. Newly emerging terms and highly general terms are given priority; terms that have been in use for many years but are still used domestically or internationally are included in their entirety; and obsolete, outdated, or rarely used specialized terms are also included when necessary for reading older literature or current literature by elderly or foreign authors. According to the characteristics of chemistry and chemical engineering, long and complex systematic names that readers can name independently based on naming principles are generally not included. The 《Dictionary》 follows the naming principles of the National Committee for the Revision of Scientific and Technical Terms, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine for the National Technical Terms Standards, and the professional standards of professional associations. Generally, standardized terms and widely used translations are placed first, while colloquial names and commercial names are placed afterward. Most names of people and places are translated, with a few highly specialized terms retained in their original form in accordance with professional conventions; translations follow standardized methods. For some important and commonly used substances, the 《Dictionary》 also provides the generic name in Chinese translation. During the compilation process, experts and scholars from various fields were organized to conduct the selection, curation, and organization of entries, with professional review and finalization conducted by specialists. Specifically, Mr. Song Xinqi, Mr. Sun Boqing, Mr. Yu Tao, Mr. Qi Jiayi, and Mr. Chen Guohuan were respectively responsible for the finalization of several major parts, including chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biomedical, and engineering equipment. The drafting work was entrusted to approximately ten experts and scholars, with Mr. Song Xinqi in charge. From the initiation to the publication of this book, the work of supplementing new terms has never ceased. After publication, we also invite readers to work with us to continuously improve the 《Dictionary》.
