Features: "This is a great book. It is meticulously written by a scholar who has made significant contributions not only to the JSP specification but also to the JSP and Servlet reference implementation. The book provides numerous useful examples and is a highly collectible resource in the JSP field." — Eduardo Pelegri-Llopart, Chief Engineer of the JSP Specification
Hans Bergsten is the founder of Gefion Software, and his main achievement is the development of JSP-based components for web application development. Since the formation of the servlet and JSP specifications, Hans has been an active participant in the working groups. As a member of the Apache Jakarta Project Management Committee, he made significant contributions to the development of the Apache Tomcat reference implementation used for both specifications. Starting in 1999, enterprise Java swept across the Java programming community with storm-like force, as developers recognized its potential for building distributed applications. Now, JSP (JavaServer Pages) continues to bridge the gap between web designers and programmers, enabling them to collaborate in creating dynamic websites. JSP is built on the specific Java Servlet technology, making it easier to develop dynamic web applications, even for hardcore programmers. JSP Design (Second Edition) has been thoroughly revised and updated to include major changes in the JSP 1.2 specification, featuring detailed content on the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) — a set of eagerly adopted JSP element specifications for tasks commonly needed in most JSP applications. The book begins by explaining how JSP leverages Java servlets to create efficient, portable web applications. It also demonstrates how to start JSP using the Apache Tomcat server and provides detailed coverage of JSP syntax and functionality, error handling and debugging, authentication and personalization, as well as how to use JSTL for database access, XML processing, and internationalization. The book meets the different needs of two types of professionals learning JSP: one group is web designers, who are interested in how to use JSP elements on web pages, and the other is programmers, who are deeply concerned with the JSP API and how to effectively use JSP in enterprise-level applications. If you belong to the latter group, the book will also guide you into more advanced topics, such as integrating servlets and JavaBeans with JSP using the standard Apache Struts MVC framework. Finally, the author demonstrates how to develop custom tag libraries using realistic examples, which readers can use as a starting point for their own JSP libraries.
