Selected Works of Russian Literature

Author: Zhang Jianhua

Publish Date: 2001-08-01
Features: This series of foreign literature anthologies includes eleven countries and regions, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Arabia, Latin America, Japan, and South Korea. Each anthology covers the entire literary history of its respective country or region, from the early stages of literary development to the 1980s. Although each anthology has different focuses based on the unique characteristics of each country's literary development, all of them include representative writers from important stages in literary history and cover major literary forms such as poetry, prose, fiction, and drama. The emphasis of the anthologies is on the works themselves, with concise "author introductions" and footnotes designed to help students understand the works. The reflection questions after each selection aim to guide students to delve deeper into the underlying meanings of the works after grasping their language, allowing them to extract more spiritual nourishment. Since these are anthologies, it is impossible to be all-encompassing, and the selection of writers and works often sparks some controversy. In this regard, the compilers of each anthology have adopted a relatively pragmatic approach. The classic writers of each country have gradually been shaped by generations of readers through repeated evaluation, and they are recognized in their respective countries. Their representative works naturally appear in our anthologies. Therefore, the list of writers and works included in our books is essentially a traditional one. However, since the compilers are all Chinese teachers with teaching experience, they have fully considered the acceptance ability of Chinese students and the teaching characteristics of Chinese universities in the process of evaluation and selection. This is perhaps the main advantage of this literary anthology over imported foreign counterparts.
