He participated in the management, restructuring, and transformation of the old education system, as well as the initial exploration and development of socialist education. He worked as a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Education for eight years and led the rectification of Shanghai's basic education after the Cultural Revolution. After the reform and opening-up, his educational ideas are reflected in many major reforms of China's basic education. Upon retirement, he traveled extensively, engaging in broader educational practice and theoretical research, and led the national key project "Experimental Study of Primary and Secondary Education Models for the 21st Century." He is known as the "living fossil" of China's general education field.
