The sudden death of the Danish King brings a dramatic change to Prince Hamlet's life. The revelation of the truth about his father's death, whispered by his father's ghost at night, plunges the prince into a torment of revenge. One day, the news of "the prince being mad" spreads throughout the court. In reality, it was merely a ploy to seize the opportunity for revenge. During the performance of the play-within-a-play orchestrated by the prince, the current king—Claudius's erratic behavior further convinces the prince that he is the murderer of his father!
Claudius, realizing his tracks have been exposed, feigns ignorance of the prince's alleged murder of Polonius and sends him to England, hoping to eliminate his nemesis through the hands of others. The astute prince intercepts and alters letters along the way, kills the messenger, and returns to Denmark. Claudius, failing in his first plan, concocts another scheme—manipulating Polonius's son, Laertes, into a duel with Hamlet, intending to use a poisoned sword to eliminate the prince.
Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies. Shakespeare was a great playwright and poet of the European Renaissance. Born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a town in central England, to a family of merchants, he joined a theater troupe around 1590. He once worked as a stablehand and stagehand before embarking on his career as a writer. He left behind thirty-seven surviving plays, two long poems, and one hundred fifty-four sonnets, proving himself a prolific author.
